Love the look of decorative mouldings on your furniture and craft projects, but working with a curved surface? Paint Couture Flexible Resin in Ivory or Black could be just the thing for your next creative project.
Perfect for using with Iron Orchid Designs silicone moulds, it lets you create raised details that can add character to furniture, frames and other decorative pieces. Think Christmas baubles, bottles, flower pots as well as furniture legs, round tables and chair backs! The appeal is in the flexibility so, rather than limiting your design to flat surfaces, you can add the flexible castings to curved surfaces too!
What is flexible resin?
Flexible resin is used to produce lightweight, bendable castings. Unlike the rigid resin castings that we've been making for years, flexible resin castings are our new 'go-to' product for embellishing curved projects.
With approximately four minutes working time and four hours curing time, your casting will be ready in no time at all! Always follow the instructions on your Paint Couture Flexible Resin packaging and, if you’re trying it for the first time, start with a small mould and a test piece before moving on to your project.
Where could you use it?
Think about the places where a little decorative detail would make a big difference: the front of a curved drawer, the edge of a picture frame, a Christmas bauble or the curved side of a piece of furniture. A simple moulded accent can look beautiful on its own, while repeated motifs can help tie a larger project together.
Before attaching a casting, hold it against the surface to check the fit. Testing first is much easier than discovering that halfway through a makeover.
How to get started with a silicone mould
Choose a clean, dry mould with a design that suits the scale of your project. Make sure to read the safety precautions on the bottles before you start. Prepare and mix the resin exactly as directed by Paint Couture - equal parts of Step 1 and Step 2 - mix thoroughly but gently so as not to cause any air bubbles and then our the resin mixture carefully into the mould, taking your time around fine details.
Your casting will be ready in approximately four hours (times will depend upon the temperature of your working space and any humidity present). Remove the casting from your mould and attach to your project using a good quality glue.
Flexible resin or air-dry clay?
Both can be useful for decorative moulds, but they suit different projects and ways of working. If you’re choosing between them, think about the surface you’re decorating, the finish you want and how you prefer to make your castings. There’s no need to pick one material for every project.

Make it your own
The best furniture details don’t have to be complicated. Try one small moulding on a drawer front, or use a pair of matching designs to frame a cupboard door. Whether you leave the detail subtle or make it the star of the piece, flexible resin gives you another way to play with texture and shape.
